May 24, 2021: Day 7 of our 12-day drive around Iceland road-trip. The weather this morning was cold and cloudy with light snow flurries. After our 7:30 breakfast we set out for the coastal town of Húsavík (we looked for Lars and Sigrit , but they were nowhere to be found). Since today was a holiday (Wit Monday) in Iceland, and it’s still low season and Covid, the whale watching tour was only running once in the late afternoon, so we had to skip.
After exploring the city, we back tracked to Mývatn to hike the Dimmuborgir lava fields. We could have spent all day here but needed to keep moving East. We attempted to visit the Viti Crater in the volcanic area of Krafla, but the road was closed about .5 mile short due to a snow slide. Disappointed we turned around and moved on.
We drove out and parked at the trail head of the Dettifoss waterfall. A brisk 1.5 mile hike over rock and through ankle deep snow awarded us with a grand view of this magnificent waterfall.
We made the rest of the long snowy drive across the hills and valleys to the far eastern town of Egilsstaðir were we are staying for the night. Our charming boutique hotel is situated on lake Lagarfljót.
Tomorrow will be another busy day of traveling and sightseeing as we progress South from here. We are very impressed with Iceland so far and are already planning where we want to explore more on our next trip.
