May 20, 2021: Day 3 of our 12-day drive around Iceland road-trip. Today we left the village of Patreksfjörður and made the drive to Ísafjörður. Although it was only 117 miles, it took over 6 hours to cover the distance.
We passed through the tiny remote villages of Tálknafjörður and Bildudalur before making our way up the steep, narrow, winding dirt and gravel road along the coast and over mountains (that still had dustings of snow) finally arriving at the famed Dynjandi waterfalls. The dirt and gravel road (barely 1 lane) was made for slow going but traveling through the spectacular “untouched” landscape was more than worth the effort.
After hiking the waterfall trails, we set off for the town of Ísafjörður. Back on the paved roads we passed through two 3-mile long tunnels bored through the mountains to reach our destination for the night, the Ísafjörður-Horn Hotel.
Tomorrow is going to be a long drive day down to Laugarbakki village.
