Tidal Wetlands Restoration Project and Cruise On the Delta

The crew of Narnia are very fortunate to live on the Delta in Northern California. Some of the reasons we purchased here was because it was adjacent to a large wildlife preserve and the miles of waterways offered great kayaking, power boating, and a “no low bridge” route from our home to San Francisco Bay (where Narnia is docked). We keep Narnia’s little sister(a Capri 18 Sailboat), an Avon SeaSport RIB and Kayaks on the dock at home.

Now we have yet another reason to like it here. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Water Resources board have acted to “restore” the tidal wetlands in our area. This is an effort to create more suitable habitat for the delta smelt, salmonids, migratory birds and other endangered animals of Northern California. We could already see some results from our home, birds settling in to the newly created lakes as the crews have started breaching and removing levees. We decided to take the Avon out to get a closer look. WOW, what a difference, we are going to have to relearn our routes and channels.

Some links to articles and a video about the project are here and here.

Enjoy the photos and videos.

This is the view from our home now.
