The sun rose on December 22, 2021 to find us still cruising down the Danube through the rolling hills of the Wachau Valley. This Austrian region is famous for it’s wine vineyards (dormant this time of year), small quaint villages and hilltop fortresses. We bundled up against the 20 degree Fahrenheit chill, sat on our balcony, and watch the countryside slowly slip by. The areas charms were out in force.
We arrived in the town of Krems, Austria in the early afternoon, disembarked, and after a short stroll along the water, we boarded a bus for the 30 ride to the Göttweig Abbey where the monks greeted us with locally brewed Apricot wine. This Benedictine monastery is still very active and we were treated to a tour of the grounds, the chapel, and a small portion of the vast library while learning of the long and varied history of this UNESCO world heritage site.
