We FINALLY have an open Christmas Market! While there were some Cultural Market celebrations open in Prague, this is our first “official” European Christmas Market visit on this trip. In total we visited 3 markets in Vienna, We went first to the large market at Rathausplatz, and then 2 smaller markets, Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz, both within walking distance from the large market. Entry into each of the markets was controlled by gatekeepers and the areas around themselves were fenced off. We had to show proof of COVID vaccination along with ID to enter. Once inside the fence facemasks were optional. We entered just as the sun was setting at 4PM with temperature in the low 20’s.
The markets had many stands stands selling a variety of Food, Snacks, Sweets, Trinkets and the ever present Glühwein. The mood was festive with many families out with smaller children enjoying the treats of the season. Sue and I shared a potato pancake and drank warm red Glühwein from our souvenir mugs and generally had a wonderful evening wandering around the city and various markets taking in all the Christmas ambiance.
We ended out evening at Stephanplatz and caught the subway back to the ship. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and we are in Europe!
