Narnia’s refit began way back in October 2021(See here and here) when, after attending the Boat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, we decided to replace most of the circa 2005 electronics/navigation gear. We made good progress in November (see here) removing/replacing the Nav Pods, Chart Plotter, Wind and Depth Gauges while bridging the old RobNet, Simnet and NMEA0183 based units into the new NMEA 2000 backbone until we could haul out and replace them.
The refit was then placed on pause while Narnia’s crew went to Europe in search of Xmas Markets in December (read about it here). It began again in January with ripping out most of the old system wiring, running new conduit throughout the hull, running new wire, pre-wiring the thru-hull transducers and new mast gear. Another pause February-March while the Crew went to to work as dog handlers for the Alaska Iditarod and travel the Arctic Circle (more here). The planned April 2022 haul-out date was put aside when Dan was invited to crew a sailboat 4000 miles from Panama to French Polynesia (that adventure detailed here).
With all that time between the initial plan in October and now, the initial plans for the refit expanded a bit. Since we already planned to remove the mast while Narnia was on the hard, we decided it would be a perfect time to add a new Cell/WI-FI Booster, Cameras, and a TV Antenna to the stick. We will also remove and replace the VHF antennae, remove the old/unused 2G antenna and replace the coax cables with LMR400. We need to decide what to do with the halyard grabbing deck lights. We will have the Main, Jib, and Staysails serviced at a local sail loft during this time, they are still in excellent shape, but the thread is wearing on the covers and they could use a good cleaning
Narnia heads for the boatyard June 5, 2022. The mast will be pulled June 6th and the boat put on the hard June 8th. In preparation for Narnia’s haul-out we turned her into a motorboat! With the help of sailing buddy Frank, we removed all of the sails, removed the leisure furl boom (it barely fit in the campervan for transport). Later we removed all of her canvas (enclosure, dodger, bimini) and ordered a ton of parts, cables, grease, sealants, connectors, etc off the internet. Our home was beginning to look like a warehouse. It’s all packed into the campervan now as we plan to “live” out of the van while working on the boat.
