Today we docked in Picton, New Zealand. Picton is located on the South Island near the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound. It serves as the major transportation hub between the North and South Islands of New Zealand connecting roads and rails by a series of ferries that traverse the Cook Strait. It is also a major port for shipping New Zealand logs to be processed in China.
For this stop, we opted to take a ferry tour of the Queen Charlotte and Marlborough sounds followed by a hike along a portion of the Queen Charlotte Track. Walking the complete 43.5 mile trail from it’s start in the Marlborough Sound to its end at Kenepuru Sound usually takes 3-5 days, we opted for the much shorter 1.78 mile loop at the trailhead. A great day in New Zealand.
