Our journey through the South Island of New Zealand concludes with a scenic day of cruising through the Fiordland National Park, This is the largest national park in New Zealand covering just over 4,800 square miles and is a major part of the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Site. The area contains 14 majestic glacier carved fiords (sounds) of which we were privileged to visit five: Dusky Sound, Breaksea Sound, Doubtful Sound, Thompson Sound and the Milford Sound. An amazing site to behold.
Our local pilot and naturalist actually boarded the day before in Dunedin and stayed with us for the duration of park visit, with the naturalist providing commentary over the ships public address system along the way. The weather was perfect as entered the park via Dusky Sound just before 9AM andstayed clear until we exited Milford Sound just after 6PM. The pilot and naturalist disembarked soon after, and we continued our journey, heading NW for 3 days until our next stop in Sydney Australia.
