Day 42: Port Louis, Mauritius

After 7 days at sea on a rocking ship, we were ready to feel dry land under our feet. Today we arrived in Mauritius, a tiny island nation located in the Indian Ocean just east of Madagascar. We picked up our pilot around 7:15AM and were secured to our berth at 8AM. Even at this early hour the temperature was already in the high 70’s with high humidity, giving support to the lush green landscape of the hills beyond the city. This was a new country for us (check off the list). It’s also interesting to note that Mauritius was the only known habitat of the extinct dodo, a flightless bird.

We did not have any tours scheduled for today we decided to take the shuttle into town to see what there was to see. We had heard that there was a local vegetable market in old town, so set off in search of the prize. We walked through the newer waterfront area where our shuttle deposited us and proceeded through the underground crossings to arrive in the area where locals’ shop. Given the diverse history of the nation, the local vibe was a mix of French, English, Creole, and Indian influences. It was somewhat chaotic. We found and browsed the market and continued to exploration of this vibrant city before taking the shuttle back to the ship for our 6PM sail away.

    1. Hi Debi! Great to hear from you.
Yes we are tracking the cruise on the Narnia site as it gives us a bit more control over the content and format and archiving of the information. Also I have several friends who do not use facebook for various reasons.
