Day 68 finds us docked in Siracusa on the Italian island of Sicily. The city is notable for its rich Greek and Roman history, culture, amphitheaters, architecture, and as the birthplace and home of the pre-eminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes.
We were still inflicted with the shipboard “respiratory crud” so were taking it fairly slow. We had a late, leisurely breakfast on board then Dan set out to explore the historic areas of the city while Sue enjoyed relaxing on the empty ship.
The first stop was the open-air market selling a variety of meats, fish, fruits, veggies, and local delicacies. Navigating the narrow streets, Dan slowly made his way to the far end of the island for visit the Castello Maniace. This sprawling citadel was constructed between 1232 and 1240 by the Emperor Frederick II.
Making his way back through the bustling old downtown, Dan stopped to buy that truly Italian treat, freshly made Cannoli. With treasures in hand, Dan made his way back to the ship in time for the sunset sail away.
