Day 72: Heraklion, Greece (Crete)

As we were leaving Athens last night, the captain announced that our next scheduled port, the island of Patmos, Greece, was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and we would be diverting to Herkalion on the island of Crete. Herkalion is said to have some very nice attractions worthy of exploring, such as the old town, the Venation fortress of Koules, the Agios Menis Cathedral, as well as a beautiful harbor area. But alas we wouldn’t know. We are still sick with the “respiratory crud” and down for the count so stayed in the cabin sleeping most of the day away. Dan did manage to take the short shuttle bus ride in the afternoon that deposited him just outside the port terminal, but he determined that he was too weak to make the short hike into town and there was not enough time to complete a Hop On Hop Off tour. He rejoined Sue back on board to try to sleep off the illness. We heard from others that it was a nice place.
