Day 74: Rhodes, Greece

As we continue the Mediterranean portion of this world cruise, we find ourselves visiting the island of Rhodes, Greece. Historically, Rhodes was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient WorldThe Medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site.  Since we were docked close and both still recovering from the “respiratory crud” that has plagued us for several weeks, today’s exploration primarily focused on the old city and surrounding waterfront.

Sue still wasn’t feeling well enough to adventure out, so while she enjoyed the empty ship, Dan made is way to the entry gate of the old city to see what he could find. In hindsight he should have brought or downloaded a map of the city as cell coverage within the walls was spotty at best making apple/google maps useless for finding the historic sites. In the end he resorted to aimlessly wandering the narrow streets and alleyways looking for anything that might look interesting. The city was sparse on directional signage, but rich in ancient ruins. It was fantastic!

After meandering and getting lost within the old city for a couple of hours, Dan exited the city via the
Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and made his way along the waterfront, past the Windmills of Mandraki, to the entrance to Rhodes Harbour with its attendant Rhodian Deer Statues believed to be the site of the Colossus of Rhodes before it was destroyed.

We left Rhodes just after 5PM, next stop, Chania, Crete.
