Day 77: Corfu, Greece

We received notice on April 4th that the Bora wind was kicking up storms in the Adriatic Sea so our scheduled stops in Dubrovnik Croatia and Bar, Montenegro would not be happening. We were really disappointed with this as these stops would have checked two more countries off our list. Instead, we were staying in the Ionian Sea and stopping in Corfu, Greece and Agostoli, Greece, so at 6AM on a cool April 6th, we picked up our harbor pilot and proceeded to dock in Corfu.

Since we have never been to Corfu before, we booked the local Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus tour to get the lay of the land. We rode the shuttle bus to the terminal gates, walked the short distance to where the tour bus was waiting and was soon on our way. The 1 hour tour passed by the Kanoni viewpoint, overlooking Mouse Island and the  Vlacherna Monastery, the Mon Repos Palace, old town, the New Fortress and finally the Old Fortress. It is the Old Fortress that would prove to be Dan’s downfall (so to speak).

The story goes like this. After we completed the HOHO tour route, we returned to the ship for a quick lunch and then Dan headed back out to reboard the HOHO bus and returned to the Old Fortress to explore the sprawling grounds. It should be noted that the fortress is built on a hill, and one must navigate many stone steps as one explores the structure and surrounding grounds. Dan explored for about 2 hours and was making his way down the last few steps, enjoying the view, when he took a tumble. The fall mainly hurt his pride, scraped up his leg, and most tragically, broke the screen of his iPhone rendering it totally unusable. Downfallen, he cut his exploration short, reboarded the bus, and made his way back to the ship to clean his wounds and sulk. He was still researching repair options as the ship sailed away from Corfu. <sigh>
