Day 83: Ajaccio, France (Corsica)

Today we dock in the picturesque city of Ajaccio, France, on the island of Corsica in the Ligurian Sea. Ajaccio, capital of the island, may be best known for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1769. The city has several tourist sites dedicated to Napoleon’s history in the area.

We docked at 8AM and made our way to shore soon after. As today was Saturday, Ajaccio was holding an amazing openair market just outside the port featuring fresh fish, meats, cheese, fruits, vegetables, and locally made treats. Sue ordered 2 delicious large shrimp for brunch from one of the many vendors and enjoyed them at a small table that we shared with Corsica locals. She said they were amazing. At this point Dan and Sue split up with Sue continuing to browse the markets while Dan set out on a walk of the city. His first destination was at the Napoleon Monument and Caves. He also made stops at the Citadel of Ajaccio, Napoleons family home – Maison Bonaparte, the Roch Church and the harbor pilot station at the end of the jetty wall. At the end of the day he covered almost 6 miles Ajaccio.

Back aboard the ship we joined our friends for drinks while we listened to one of our favorite onboard performers. It was a good day.
