Day 87: Marseille, France

It was raining off and on as we pulled into the harbor at Marseille, France. Founded c. 600 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea, Marseille is the oldest city in France, as well as one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Since the Viking Sea was already docked at the town center Joliette (J4) Terminal, we were docked at the Marseille Provence Cruise Center (MPCC) in the industrial section of the port. This meant that we would need to take a shuttle bus the 5 miles into town.

We had 2 main objectives for today. First was to visit Notre-Dame de la Garde, , known to local citizens as la Bonne Mère (French for ‘the Good Mother’), this Catholic basilica is the city’s best-known symbol. Second we needed to find a grocery store to find more snacks for the crew. We managed to do both just before the rain started pouring down and we made our way back to the ship.
