Day 93: Santa Cruz, Canary Islands

Another itinerary change. As we were leaving Casablanca on Easter Sunday, we were informed that we would be diverting from our original destination of Lanzarote, Canary Island due to expected adverse weather conditions and would instead be calling on Santa Cruz De Tenerife. Sometimes abbreviated as Santa Cruz, it is the capital of the island of Tenerife, Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and one of the capitals of the Canary Islands, along with Las Palmas. We arrived early in the morning into this autonomous community of Spain, while watching the lighted cross on the hill above the city.

We had no plans for this unexpected port, but did hear that there was an excellent (and free) military history museum located in the Fort of Almeyda, within an easy walk from the port. It was pretty amazing. The exhibits very well done and you could spend all day roaming the expansive grounds. We highly recommend a visit.

Also within an easy walk from the ship was an exhibit dedicated to the El Tigre cannon reported to have shot off admiral Horatio Nelson‘s arm on July 25, 1797. The cannon is located in Castle of San CristĂłbal

Our other major objective for the day was to buy KFC for the ship’s crew. For some reason they go crazy for KFC. We purchased a couple of buckets of chicken (note buckets are 6 pieces here), with sides, and distributed it among the staff. We were very popular 🙂
