Day 110 finds us docking in the city center of Puntarenas, in the country of Costa Rica. It was a picture perfect clear warm day. We last visited this resort town of 100,000 people almost 20 years ago and we were a bit shocked to see that it appears to be slipping into decline. While the area immediately around the port was vibrant and active, walking just a short distance along the beach tourist walk revealed empty storefronts, tired resorts, empty streets and beaches filled with driftwood and debris. It was a stark contrast to vibrant booming resort city that we remember from our last visit. We did note that everyone we encountered going about their daily lives appeared to be friendly, helpful and happy. The city didn’t feel dirty or unsafe, just a bit worn, empty and in need of revitalization.
Sue returned to the ship after pursuing the local street vendors while Dan set out on a 5.73 mile walk along the beach front, passing many of the sculptures that dominated the walk. He made is way to the oldest lighthouse in Costa Rica, the 1856 El Faro de Puntarenas. He then doubled back to the 1902 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral near the town center before visiting the market to once again purchase some treats for the crew.
