Ferry from Stykkishólmur to Patreksfjordhur

May 19, 2021: Day 2 of our 12-day drive around Iceland road-trip. Today we explored the village of Stykkishólmur while we waited for the car ferry to to Brjanslaekur in Iceland’s Westfjords.

“Exploration” of this tiny village consisted of getting fuel at the AO station, morning coffee at the local bakery, picking up lunch at the Bonus market and eating it in the church parking lot on top of the hill overlooking the village plus a nice hike up the local lighthouse.

We boarded the ferry at 2:30PM for the 3-hour ride that included a stop at Flatey island where we disembarked most of our 20 fellow passengers (no cars) along with several bags of soil. Flatey is a small island with a permanent population of 5 and is the home to many nesting bird colonies, including puffins.

Arriving in Brjanslaekur, we made the 40 minute drive over the very windy mountain roads to the fishing village of Patreksfjörður were we will be spending the night.

We checked in at another charming Guest House with a great view of the water in the village of Patreksfjordhur and had dinner at a local restaurant (we shared a very tasty vegetable quiche and salad).

Tomorrow we will be journeying over 93 miles of scenic gravel roads to reach our next layover in Ísafjörður.
