Reykjavik to Stykkishólmur via Snæfellsjökull National Park

Tuesday,May 18, 2021, Day 1 of 12 of drive all of the way around Iceland. This should be our longest driving day as we drove 300 miles from Reykjavik (10+ hours), through the Snæfellsjökull National Park, to end our day in the village of Stykkishólmur.

Such a beautiful country. We drove through lava fields, hot springs, waterfalls, towering glaciers, beaches, rock cliffs, charming villages, we could have spent weeks exploring this area alone, but this is our “get to know Iceland” trip so we had to settle for tiny samplings of each. Many attractions were still closed.

We visited our 1st waterfall at Fossárrétt, stopped at a self-serve vegetable stand in Kleppjárnsreykir, the Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls in Reykholt, hot springs in Delidartunguhver, the old wooden church in the hamlet of Búðir and visited the tern colony at Arnastapi.

We made good use of our 4×4 Subaru rental car to take a 8 mile, 1.5 hours off road journey to find the lighthouse at Skálasnagi-Saxhólsbjarg (Dan really enjoyed this part of the trip).

Tomorrow we will explore Stykkishólmur then take the 3 hour car ferry to Brjanslaekur to continue our journey in Iceland’s Westlands.

Our lodging for the night is an adorable 150 year old historic house listed as one of Iceland’s heritage buildings (10 bedrooms).

We enjoyed an amazing fresh fish dinner tonight (we shared scallops, halibut tartare (both small plates) and an Artic char) plus of course some red wine .
