Reykjavik. No Volcano for Us. Blue Lagoon Instead.

Saturday, May 29, 2021: This is our last full day and night in Iceland. We were planning to hike the Fagradalsfjall volcano today, but the trail was reported unsafe by the Icelandic government travel site due to severe weather (2 hour hike each way):

Storm, very strong wind gusts and rain so no condition for hiking to the eruption site.)

Disappointed we couldn’t do the hike on this trip, we decided to drown our sorrows with another visit to the Blue Lagoon. While noticeably more crowded then when we were there 2 weeks ago, it was still nowhere near capacity. A 3 hour soak in the geothermal mineral pool along with the facials, sauna and steam room were an excellent way to spend our last day.

For our last dinner in Iceland, Sue found an amazing place in old town Reykjavik, (Tapas Barinn), just a short 20 min walk in the rain from our hotel, that served Icelandic specialties including puffin and whale. The restaurant was packed with locals and very few obvious tourists. We shared the chef choice, “Journey into the unknown”. The 7 course tapas meal (plus dessert) was amazing and by far our best meal in Iceland. Thankfully the meal did not contain puffin or whale.

Tomorrow we head to the airport for a 8 hour flight to Seattle where we will spend the night before flying on to Oakland early Monday morning.
