The day is here. We are boarding the plane for a flight to Quito, Ecuador where we will spend a couple of days touring before continuing on to the Galapagos Islands. We are flying from SFO to Miami and then on the Quito. It is a very long (over 24 hour) travel day. We obtained a negative COVID test at the Airport this morning in order to meet the testing time requirements for entry Ecuador. We will be tested again before we fly to Galapagos.
This is a very strange time to travel. We will take appropriate precautions, but we refuse to put life on hold and mark time. We are using the JW Marriot in Quito as our home base in mainland Ecuador.
Later: We made it to Quito, all checked in for 2 nights before flying to Baltra Galapagos on Sunday. It was a breeze to get through COVID screening requirements, immigration and customs. Smooth flight with a very steep and winding decent maneuvering around the mountains. We walked around the area a little bit this afternoon then took a long nap (I think we are getting too old for red-eye flights with a connection LOL). Tomorrow we have a full day of touring around Quito. Also so far no issues with altitude sickness as we have read that even at 9,211 above sea level at the hotel a lot of people experience it. We are taking Diamox to help prevent symptoms and drinking lots of water to stay hydrated.
