Narnia Canvas Repair and Waterproofing

Owning a boat is not all umbrella drinks at sunset, sometimes you have to take time out to do some maintenance. This month was one of those times. Narnia’s original canvas was pretty much shot when we bought her in 2017, so we had a completely new set custom made in 2018. Fast forward 7 years and was starting to show signs of wear, particularly around the seams where the thread was starting to rot.

We pulled off the dodger, bimini, enclosure, hatch covers and gooseneck cover (31 pieces in all) and hauled then down to Megan Lancy, the new owner of Pacific Crest Canvas in Alameda. Megan inspected and restitched all of the panels, this time using Gore Tenara thread that should outlast the sunbrella fabric. We are very happy with the repairs.

After the restitch, we brought all the home and waited for sunny weather so we could apply a couple of coats of StarBrite Waterproofing. We bought 3 gallons for 1/2 price during a flash sale, we should have bought more. We laid everything out in the backyard on a clear, warm, windless morning and used a garden sprayer to apply 2 gallons of waterproofing to the panels then allowed all to dry in the sun for 6 hours, We still need to lubricate the zippers and clean the clear panels before reassembling everything back on Narnia. There are 8 additional canvas pieces on Narnia (windless cover, helm cover, winch covers and the leisure furl cover) that we will waterproof at the dock.

  1. Wow, that is a LOT of work! Do you enjoy doing all of it, or at least most of it? I am envious of your energy and dedication.
