Today we woke up early and set out on our extended exploration of Lima. Today started with a visit to a working fishermanโs market in the Chorrillos area of Lima. Here we saw fresh fish that, were caught this morning, being gutted, cleaned and displayed for purchase by local buyers. The local fishermen talked to us about their daily lives as we watched them repairing and making nets. It seems like such a hard life. They told us that Chinese fishing fleets and others are making it difficult to survive as they are taking many of the medium and large fish from the seas.
The next stop Museo Larco, a privately owned archeological museum in the Pueblo Libre district. It provides an overview of 5,000 years of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. Their collection of pottery was extensive. It is also known for its gallery of pre-Columbian erotic pottery. Those photos are redacted from this post. ๐ There were also beautiful textiles, jewelry, tools and paintings. The building itself is also a historic landmark in the city.
We then drove to the downtown, Colonial section of Lima where we saw the Presidential Palace, some beautiful churches and the remains of the old city walls. It is a Unesco World Heritage site. We had lunch in Parque La Muralla where we had ceviche, seafood risotto, beef and a pisco sour. It was very good
Tomorrow we leave for Cusco, Peru so we had to pack and get to bed for our early morning flight. Cusco’s elevation is over 11,150 ft so we will get to see if our Diamox altitude sickness meds actually work.
